I was just curious what everyone's favorite algorithm was. I would have to say that mine is the PSLQ algorithm.
It just fascinates me that you can find the relationship of seeming random numbers of a series.
It has been used to derive an algorithm to help find the digits of pi. I'll try to post the link to one where it let's you find out the nth digit of pi without knowing the preceding or proceeding numbers.

Shostie. I just don't understand what you mean. What is so geeky about algorithms? [ 12-12-2002, 03:52 PM: Message edited by: Zach ]

Nothing, it was a joke. Every field has debates on 'what's your favorite [insert concept or object here]?'
But for this one, I imagined a group of generic nerds straight out of Saved By The Bell...
Or I'm just stupid. Either/or.

Sorry. I was just giving you a little bit of dry sarcasm back. I knew what you meant and believe it or not, my friends back in high school actually discussed this one day in Calculus.
For some reason it has always been that algorithm. I don't even know if anyone else on this board actively pursues new and exciting mathematical equations on the Internet, but I figured it was worth a shot.

It's still not nearly as bad as the comic book geeks who argue endlessly whether or not Superman can defeat Wolverine in a fight or if the Millennium Falcon can outrun the Enterprise, etc. There are so many variations of that formula, and those hard-core geeks are determined to figure out every single one. If I ever resort to a question like, oh, "If Buffy got into a fight with the Bionic Woman, who would win?" then it's usually because I'm sarcastically pointing out the silliness of whatever inane conversation is taking place.

Gotta love CBR. I think the best one there is Yoda vs. Captain Planet. What makes it so screamingly funny is knowing they are taking it so seriously.
Wanna try something fun? Go to a comic book store, buy a comic, then deliberately rip off the cover as you walk out past the other customers and clerks.

Pharris, that does not work in comparison because both character occupy the same comic book universe. There is a possibility, a likelihood even, that they will meet, if they haven't already.
How about Darla from Buck Rogers in a catfight against Princess Leia?
Or Super-Grover in dramatic battle against Gleep the space monkey?
And yes, not only do I know the correct spelling for Mr. Mxyzptlk, but I can pronounce it correctly as well. Backwards, too.

I put up one over on CBR once: "Klingons vs. Stormtroopers." Apparently they did this debate before and went through the motions...
Sorry, we're off topic, Zach.

It's OK. It's practically expected to happen on this board.

The Bionic woman would kick Buffy's ASS. I mean... come ON. That's obvious.

There you go Keith. It's kind of a geeky topic, but no one stayed on topic. Oh well. What are you going to do?
