It seems that Mr. Mathers is heading down the route of Vanilla Ice. Like Vanilla Ice, who had is absolutely STELLAR motion picture debut in the Oscar Award-winning film Cool as Ice, Eminem is coming out with a new gangsta-oriented German Expressionist film of his own: 8 Mile. With Eminem's reputation as a rapper/classically trained harpsichordist, the question remains as to whether he will contribute anything to the soundtrack, or let his pro-Dadaist leanings take hold and remix some old tracks from his 1999 album "Die Kunst ist Tot." I suppose we will just have to wait and see...

Wow. This is weird. Eminem in his own movie. I believe this was only a matter of time, wouldn't you say?
Although I don't enjoy rap, I do enjoy some of Mr. Mathers' material. At times he can be pretty damn funny. Other times the songs are just stupid.
I wonder if this movie is rentable yet?

Yes, indeed, just a matter of time. When are musicians and actors going to learn: You CAN'T cross over. It's impossible. Ultimate example: Eddie Murphey.

Come now, there have been several musicians who have crossed over to become actors and vice-versa. Here are some examples from over the years...
Ice-T Frank Sinatra Sting Jennifer Lopez David Hasslehoff Madonna L.L. Cool J Barbra Streisand
I think overall time has proven that it's easier for a musician to cross over into acting than vice-versa.

Okay, I'll grant you Ice-T.
Sinatra went and made Ocean's Eleven, which was good, but come on, man, it's Sinatra. He barely even counts as a human being. More like a god.
Sting? If you bring up Dune I'll punch you. :-)
J-Lo did a good job opposite George Clooney in Out of Site, I'll grant that.
Hasslehoff?? HASSLEHOFF!?!?!?!?!
Madonnna??? If you're thinking Evita go and look back on "Who's that girl?"
LL Cool J.......... Movie?
I'm not going to even touch that last one...
But so far, the people you've named were (mostly) musicians who broke into acting. How many screen stars are there (besides Hasslehoff, and that's only in Europe) who've become successful music artists?

Sting has performed excellently in a number of acting roles: The Who's Quadrophenia, Brimstone and Treacle (Toronto Film Festival award!), Plenty, Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels, and all those SNL episodes, to name a few. And I love Dune! I have a Feyd Rautha action figure.
LL Cool J? Great in the movie Toys w/ Robin Williams, and he even had a sitcom that lasted for 2 year.
J-Lo? Just because you don't like her doesn't mean she isn't extremely successful, with several hit movies to back her up and two platinum albums.
And the same goes for Madonna. She's performed in a number of successful films over the years; you're just allowing your dislike to color your response.
But so far, the people you've named were (mostly) musicians who broke into acting. How many screen stars are there (besides Hasslehoff, and that's only in Europe) who've become successful music artists?
Well, wasn't that the point of this thread? Eminem is a musician attempting to break into acting.

Also how can you call Hasslehoff an actor thats like calling Britney a singer.

As far as Streisand though... I can't agree
Oh, and about the Eminem movie.. isn't it ironic how KIM Basinger is playing Kim... his wife.. .. and isn't he and Brittany Murphy a thing in real life? Eh.. I really don't care much for Eminem... but I love Eddie Murphy!! Beverly Hills Cop was great!! All of them Axle Foley.. what a pimpin' name!

Lindsi... Basinger is playing his mom, not his wife... Brit Murphy is doing that role...
As for Strisand, Ive got to give props.. She is a fun actress, when shes not taking herself too seriously, like in Nuts.
And Shotsie... I remember Eddie Murphys music days.. i actually have 'Party all the time' on my hard drive.
Why didnt anyone mention Don Johnson? Remember 'Heartbeat'?
Here are some GOOD performances by the folks on the above list...
Sinatra - yes, a god.. Great actor - check him out in 'On The Town' with Gene Kelly
IceT - Fun in 'Tank Girl'
Sting - "The Bride"... I need not say more.
JLo - I hate her music. Really do. But LOVED her in the Robin Williams movie 'Jack'. She gave an incredible and moving supporting performance as Jack's 5th grade teacher. Oh, when Jack asks her to be his date at the school dance and she has to tell him no... makes me cry BIG TIME.
Hasslehoff... Well, Love him on Knight Rider.
Madonna - Hey, you know what? I really liked Evita. SShe did a good job. And also, she really was great in 'League of their own'.
LLCoolJ... Halloween H20 and Deep Blue Sea. He was the best thing going for EITHER of these movies.
Striesand... well, see above.

Hmmmmmmm....As an actor/musician I find this thread interesting. Many actors and musicians have actually studied both disciplines. They ususally become know for one or the other first though. For instance Sir Lawrence olivier, the famous film and stage thespian also played in a hardcore punk band in Bristol back in the 60's. Word.
As for Eminem. The film is supposedly based "loosely" on his real life. The film is being directed by Curtis Hansen who directed Basinger in "L.A. Condfidential". I suspect the film might actually be decent.
As for Eminem's music. There is no more skilled, clever, or savvy rapper in the music industry right now. Although I am no big fan of hip hop I purchased Eminem's last two albums because I was Extremely impressed with the production and quality of his music. You may not like what he has to say, but he says it fucking well and with style. AND if you've ever been disgusted that some of his hooks intruded into your mental stereo then realize that that is the result of a talented performer executing his craft. Writing a hook is the most difficult part of music to master. It's what separates Studio musicians from megastars. It's what made THE BEATLES and so many others legends.
SO give the guy a chance
You may be surprised

I love Barbra Streisand.
Yes, I do. For all her divaness - I just can't help myself. Once again, please do not tell anyone. I will not be able to handle the redicule.
*sigh* and that duet with Celine...just. kills. me.
Yes - I know - that may cancel out my digging Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Brazilian music and 70s funk. But so be it.

Apparently "Credible" sources are saying that this movie is fantastic on many counts, particularly the acting done by Eminem. I think "Time" and "People" were the sources I heard quotes from, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone care to back me up on this?
I for one think that it could be a very entertaining flick, but I think a lot of people won't enjoy it because of the soundtrack...I get the impression that the soundtrack isn't for people who have presets like Pharris.
Thoughts?

Directed by Curtis Hanson (who also directed Wonder Boys, fabulous...and LA Confidential - the story of Blackout and nipple chickies) - the film promises to be more than just your average (or way below average) Glitter acting vehicle for a singer/rapper. You may or may not like Eminem as a recording artist - but ya got to admit, that guy has some charisma. I am looking forward to see this movie very much actually. And although I am not a fan of rap by any stretch of the imagination...Eminem's got my respect for being one of the best lyricists in recent memory. Should we have an 8 mile fieldtrip?

You know, Pharris, that's like saying, "I'm not going to see Punch Drunk Love because Adam Sandler's in it." PDL is a P.T. Anderson flick (the same guy who did Boogie Nights and Magnolia), so therefore, it's going to be really good. Don't NOT see a movie just because you don't like who's in it.

Why do I feel like we're having the same conversation in two different forums? Sting's the man. Totally. If I were gay, I would be totally hot for him. As far as movies go, well, "Dune" and "Brimstone & Treacle" are my two favorite Sting films (if you don't count "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels"). My phone even plays the song "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" when it rings.
I, also, want to see 8 Mile for some inexplicable reason. I agree with young Ms. Elf about Eminem's amazing ability to write lyrics, even if I don't always like or approve of them.

more so than the lyrics - got amazing sense of verbal rhythm. Good for him, I say. Remember that EltonJohn/Eminem bizzare duet a couple of years ago. Could you just smell Elton's lusting over Mr. Mathers? And I remember that other performance where he walked into an auditorium filled with Eminem lookalikes. Great showmanship. Too bad I don't like rap a whole lot. He is sexy though - in some weird way. Pushes all my *danger danger bad boy* buttons. (sigh - it takes all kinds)

I always loved the SNL parody with Horatio Sanz and Chris Parnell (Sanz as Elton, Parnell as Eminem -tangent, Parnell is actually a pretty good rapper). They show them singing that song "Stan" then taking a bow from a roaring audience, cut away, then back and they're making out. Too funny.
