I find that I am severely lacking in the discipline and willpower necessary to get into the proper creative mood and create. I think of myself as a writer who doesn't ever write anything, and that's not for lack of ideas. Those of you who do write, even semi-regularly, how do you find the time, the willpower, the discipline to do so? Did you begin with it there, or was it a pattern you had to develop somehow?
Or am I just orating to the wrong crowd of lazy good-for-nothings like myself?

I'd guess that like many of us, you are driven to distraction. Why should i stay home and write something when I could go see this movie? Or go to this bar? Or play this game? Or watch this DVD?
You simply need to decide to write. It's as simple as that. Set aside a time where writing takes priority over all other worldly distractions.

Hi, i'm kind of new here, but thought i'd just reply to this to say that for me creativity is something that kind of takes hold of me and begs me to write whatever's in my head. I guess everyone approaches it in their own way, some are driven some have to drive themselves.

Sadly, most of those moments come while I am not in a place to record any of it, i.e. work or in the car on my way to work, etc. Again, for me (and most, I would assume), it comes down to discipline. It's easy for me to find inspiration and come up with ideas, I do that all the time; but it is extremely difficult for me to make the time to mold and craft those ideas and then add permanence by writing it or typing it. I think that if even the least significant of published authors waited for inspiration to grab his hand so he could empty it from his head, then he would never get anything published. Writers write, regardless of what's on their mind, and the most disciplined writers are usually the best-honed at their craft.

That's interesting because I'm just naturally like that. I always try to do the most constructive thing I can with my time. I also keep things very clean and organized. If my environment has order my mind has order and it works hand in hand. I can do something like my homework eaiser knowing that my room is clean and orderly. At least for me that helps and then my thinking is more coherent because my mind has order and my thoughts are clearer and I can just focus on what I'm doing without having something in the back of my mind.
One thing you should probably tell your students is to think. For some reason people don't do that anymore. They all give such a memorized answer to everything then when they get to college they have all this trouble on term papers because in high school they mainly learned to memorize things and spit them back out and whenever they had to do something that required actual thought they summarized straight out of a book and they end up not having a writing voice or a style which makes things really difficult on them. I must say it's fun to watch people get frustrated, drop out of school or watch them switch majors from biochemistry to philosophy. Oh man, that's a wasted year not to mention 20 grand and then switching to such a useless major and actually wasting money on it so you can have a degree but a degree in something easy to pass and totally useless and all because they couldn't think on their own. Philosophy, what a waste of time and money. Yeah, I don't know what that had to do with procrasting either.

I'm pretty much the opposite to be honest. My room is always a complete mess, and I have notes thrown all over the place. I tend to end up writing essays that are pretty well structured though. Takes me a while though.
And I know what you mean about the thinking thing. In my old school it was positively discouraged. If you had an opinion that fell out of line you could very easily get sent to the headmasters office. I was in there all the time ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
Right now I should be working on my dissertation. Think I'll click on the above link again...
