I love Donald. For years, many have argued he is really cursing up a storm, but LUCKILY no one knows what he is talking about.

Pure Disney genius.

But, there are actual examples of Donald's potty mouth. My favorite:

In "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit", you all may fondly remember the scene where Donald and Daffy are performing at Ink and Paint club at dueling piano bar.

This is part of the banter communication between them:

quote:
Daffy: I've worked with a lot of wise-quackers, but you are dethpsicable!

Donald: God damn stupid nigger! I'm gonna WAAAAAAAAGH!!!

Daffy: This is the last time I work with someone with a speech impediment!

I don't know if they "fixed" this in the most recent DVD (which is awesomely packed with extras BTW), but original claims were that what Donald was REALLY saying was:

quote:
In closed captions reads: "Goddurn stubborn nitwit"

or

Popular/similar line in many Donald shorts/films: Why you doggone little . . . I'll . . . WAAAAAAAAAGH!

My guess is the writers of the movie were playing on the familiarity of Donald's previous rants--border line catch phase "Why you doggone little . . . I'll . . . WAAAAAAAAAGH!"-- in movies, and adding the racial element.

People/viewers objecting to this movie seem to forget the movie is playing off the racial intolerance towards African Americans in that time period.

The detective was supposed to be an option for 'toons to get fair trials and media coverage in a society that was racially slanted towards them. The restaurant told Roger Rabbit that they did not "serve toons" in that restaurant (just as "coloreds" were not allowed to share "white only" facilities/establishments).

So in this frame of mind, Donald calling Daffy a "nigger" would be like one African American calling another African American a "nigger".

*sigh*

There have been other verbal problems with Donald. Wal-Mart pulled a 1937 Mickey Mouse cartoon called "Clock Cleaners" in 1995. In the cartoon a scene where a frustrated Donald Duck shouting "Fuck you!" (Walt Disney Cartoon Classics series' video "Fun on the Job"). All of this was "alleged", and I am sure Disney either dubbed it over or put some different closed caption on there.

But the love for Donald stems from the fact that he is such a bad ass. He plots evil things all of the time. He curses. HE DOESN'T WEAR PANTS!!

Disney has MANY hidden bad words (example Genie--taking the shape of a bee--whispers in Aladdin’s ear "Good teenagers, take off your clothes.") and nudity snippets (example the naked woman being edited in "The Rescuers", the "penis castle" on the "Little Mermaid" packaging/poster art, Jessica Rabbit with no panties). But, the animators are sickos (I worked there...honestly the animators are just cooped up too long...except Don Bluth who was a perv--duh, Princess Daphne). That is part of what makes Disney so awesome.

So Jessica likes to groom a landing strip. Nice.

I figured a good chunk of you were animators or gamers. But just in case you aren't, here is Princess Daphne:

Donald is white, Daffy is black.

What I don't get, maybe I just missed it somewhere, is Huey, Dewey and Louie. Donald is their uncle... and Scrooge McDuck from "Duck Tales" is their uncle... Don't they ever stay with their parents? or did they die?

Edit: I just looked him up, Scrooge McDuck is Donald's uncle... making him the boys' great uncle.

He has a whole history listed, pretty cool:

It does not matter the color of their feathers. The fact was, in the movie, the "toons" were treated like the minorities (mainly African Americans) of that time period. The toons wanted equal rights and no segregation (to use same facilities as humans, not to live in the ghetto on the other side of the wall, to have a fair trial--not just to get dipped in acid). Humans only saw toons for their entertainment value (like many Americans saw the African American's, especially in the South).

The fact that Daffy's feathers were the color black is (in my opinion) a non-issue. It just made more sense to have Donald angrily shouting/cursing racial slurs. It was more in line with his character.

Secondly, as an old intern from Disney, I know that cast members often throw out the trivia about Donald's Sister (mother to Huey, Dewey & Louie). Her name is Dumbella.

I knew her name off the top of my head, but figured I would Google her back story. Here is what I found:

quote:
The only mention of Donald's sister that we know of is in a 1938 animated short feature entitled 'Donald's Nephews'. In this cartoon Donald gets a postcard from his sister, whose name is Dumbella. She tells him she will be sending her three darling little children, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, for a visit. Donald's nephews show up, and from that point they become a semi-permanent part of Donald's household.

In a later cartoon short ('The New Spirit', 1942), Donald fills out a tax form and lists the nephews as adopted.

Thirdly, Donald has more than Huey, Dewey, and Louie as nephews. There is a fourth mysterious nephew known as Phooey.

In this family tree:

Donald's Family Tree

He is mistakenly listed as an unknowns (meaning he origin is not known). But his origin is another Disney cast member trivia favorite.

This term "Phooey Duck" has been applied to the mysterious Fourth Nephew appearing with Huey, Dewey & Louie in some comic book panels by mistake. There are many known instances. Some, however, may not be true appearances of Phooey, but rather just some other Junior Woodchuck who happens to look a lot like Huey, Dewey and Louie.

So if anyone ever asks you if Huey, Dewey & Louie have a brother, now you know. Disney dorks WILL ask this (along with who is Donald's sister). It is one of the trendy trivia questions that they learn early on. Many people use it to figure out if someone is lying about working/having worked at Disney.

There are more questions. But if I told you, they would kill me. I am going out on a limb here as it is.

My point was more that Donald's use of the word 'nigger' would have been, for lack of a better word, fitting because Daffy is black.

This is a great thread. I had long talks with Pharris about this stuff. He's an expert on everything Disney. The old old Disney cartoons are chuck full of stuff that is no longer 'Disney Family' politically correct that they are pulling and re-editing, which I find sad. One of my favorites is an old one of Goofy being the ultimate man of liesure and trying to quit smoking, and he goes crazy and starts screaming, "gimme anything! I gotta smoke something, pipe, cigar, dope, weed!!!!!" or something to that effect. The even had that one PLAYING in one of the big food courts in Epcot and we would crack up that they hadn't removed it yet which I thought was great.

Everyone trying to act like everything pleasurable is so bad and trying to convey this image of perfect never to anything that the government doesn't condone is ridiculous.

The fact that pot and mushrooms are illegal while alcohol and cigarettes are legal is the most ridiculous load of bullshit ever and PROVES that the government is a load of crap and not interested in the publics well being but is simply driven by complete profit manipulation tactics.

That Goofy clip, for anyone who wants to see it, is in the "Wonders of Life" pavilion. But I think they have that whole pavilion down for refurbishment. So it may be gone soon.

There was mention of profanity in closed captioning in this thread.

At work we have to have the closed captioning on the tv in the break room on at all time because there are some deaf employees in the offices. I got so used to watching tv this way, that I have been watching tv with closed captioning at home.

I have noticed that quite often movies on basic cable that have the profanity dubbed out with a lame audio replacement are not fixed in the closed captioning. It's pretty funny to experience this...an actor's voice is dubbed over with a phrase like "buzz off!".. and you see "Fuck off!" flash on the bottom of the screen. I bet some deaf families with children who are of reading age get pretty frustrated with that.

And then there is all the anti-nazi propaganda that Disney created.

Ah yes! On the Front Lines. That collection fucking rocks. I own it. Anti-Nazi propaganda rocks! Along with an introduction and commentary from our favorite movie critic and historian Leonard Maltin (he's on every Walt Disney Treasures set!) this has the best collection of propaganda, educational and downright funny stuff about World War II. Among the highlights:

* Watch Education for Death; it's very chilling. The Creation of a Nazi indeed.

* And then lighten your heart with a little Der Fuehrer's Face! Watch in sympathetic frustration as Donald tries his best to prepare shells for German guns, and relax in the ten seconds of paid vacation!

* Educate yourself on the virtues of long-range bombers with the full-length feature Victory Through Air Power! Alexander P. Seversky was one of the most knowledgable Allied advisors and he brings his points home in this film.

And much much more; I've even noticed some shorts that are duplicated in The Complete Goofy which I also own (the only two Walt Disney Treasures sets I own unfortunately; should've got 'em all when I could).

Incidentally, I'm curious; how many Walt Disney Treasures sets does Pharris own?

Cheeze.

Yeah, i wantedto get those DVD's when they came out. Even the ones that discuss the original park concepts (like EPCOT originally being this ideal society plan).

BTW (but off teh subject) anyone see that Batman cartoon that makes fun of Disney and its employees? It had Mr. Freeze and the immitation Walt wanted to be frozen liek him (playing on the myth that Walt was frozen himself).
