The next gen war is about to heat up, here's the way I see things:
XBox 360: The system seems very nice, however, I'm not seeing alot of must-have games come out for the system. That, and the fact that the 360 is pretty much DOA in Japan, where most systems can find their primary 3rd party support. It's mainly due to the native racism of the Japanese, who are easily some of the most xenophobic people on the face of the planet.
PS3: Now this one interests me quite a bit. The only problem is the exorbitant price tag. It's looking like, in terms of graphics, to be easily heads and tails above anything. I've seen some screen caps of the HD Gran Turismo (a series of games I WANT to like, but the whole realistic handling thing gets on my nerves) and they're nearly photo-realistic. But, $500-$600 is a lot to pay for a game system (and yes, I know that the Atari 2600 retailed for that much when inflation is included). I'll watch it closely, and will probably get one when the price tag drops to 3 or 4 hundred bucks.
Wii: This is a total wild card. I'm heavily intrigued by the system and the possibilities it offers, but I'm very, VERY fucking cautious when it comes to Nintendo. A lot of the fanbois around seem gleefully ignorant of the vicious company Yamauchi made and Arakawa brought to our shores, a company that is more monopolistic and money grubbing than Microsoft and Sony can ever hope to be. The downloading old games thing means absolutely nothing to me. If you want to pay $5 to play Kid Icarus, fine by me. I have Nesticle and a cheap USB controller. Have fun paying for it. The new control schemes are neat, but I'm worried that this will be another N64. The N64 release with what is possibly the greatest game ever, Mario 64. And despite all the possibilities, what did we get, a hundred sub-standard Mario clones. It smacks of the Virtual Boy, all flash and no sustainable substance.
So, what system am I going to buy, well that all depends. I am not, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT going to buy any of those systems any time soon. I want to wait and see. It's all about the software. Whichever system has the best games is the one that will win my lucre. If I buy a system soon, it's going to be a Gamecube. Yes, that's right, a Gamecube. I've been rather disgusted with Nintendo for years now, but I've been secretly harboring a wish to play Metroid, F-Zero, Mario, and Zelda for years now. And when the Wii comes out, which will play GC games, the bottom will fall out of the market, and I'll be able to get a system and all the games I want at basement prices.
That, and those fucking spammers put up some crappy, spyware-ridden link post in this box, and I'd rather have active discussion than that shit.
Talk away.

I'm starting to feel more and more content with my NES, Super NES and my PC, and not really worrying about new-school stuff. I say that because I bought the PS2 a few years ago (probably between 6 months and a year after launch) and I've probably bought...MAYBE...a dozen games for it. I just don't really have much time or patience for playing video games anymore. And I would kick myself if I paid 600 dollars on a system that I never play, versus spending that money on a few studio mics...
Or a hooker. As far as the game wars are concerned: I've played the 360 and actually enjoyed it. I remember being vehemently against everything about X-box back in the day, but it's really not that bad. The online support is killer and the games aren't too bad, but you're right...nothing spectacular. The coolest features are probably the downloadable demos and online play.
The PS3 WOULD entice me if it weren't for the fact that it costs an arm and a leg. They're really gonna lose a LOT of consumers on this front. I dunno...for about 3-400 more, you could get a fairly decent computer and do way more than just play video games/watch dvds.
And I don't really like anything Nintendo has done after the Super NES. The Virtual Boy was a disaster, the Gameboy Color was a money-grab (along with the gameboy color pocket, gameboy color mini, gameboy color inflatable raft, and gameboy color vibrating sex toy.) The N64 was a buggy, pixelly, puke-machine that made me nauseas to play, the Gamecube is essentially N64 pt. II : Better graphics, still the same shitty games. And the gameboy advance was the last straw for me. I bought one a few years ago the month they came out, and they were sold out of every color but pink. Strike one. I bought the fruity thing because I was about to go on vacation and figured..."what the hell, it'll be tolerable," took it home and started playing it...and realized I needed the global power of the sun to even see the fuckin' thing. I bought a castlevania game and I couldn't fucking play it. How's that for enraging? Strike Two. To this day, I have maybe 6 GBA games, and haven't played any of them in over 2 years. A few months after I bought mine...they came out with...get this...a Game Boy advance that's backlit. Yeah, they completely hosed anybody who bought it early and had high hopes for it, and tried to milk the same people by releasing the same piece of shit with a light. GENIUS! Then a few years down the line they released a new handheld system, of which...I know nobody who owns one, and nobody who cares. Strike Three. Nintendo is out for me.

But apparently, the DS is fairly popular. I remember walking through somewhere (I can't remember where, maybe some resturaunt in Pearland) and seeing a couple kids glued to the damn things.
And the N64 was, in my opinion, an awesome, but flawed system. I have many fond memories of Zelda, Mario, and F-Zero X. And Goldeneye. Shit, one of my fondest memories in gaming comes from the time I took on 3 fratboys when I was working at Disney. We did a ten point game, 3 on 1. I won 10-0. They got so pissed off because I camped around the body armor on the level and killed them whenever they came near.
I'm terribly, secretly infatuated with the Wii, but I don't know if I want to have my hand extended towards the screen at all times when I play a video game, since I'm generally drunk when I play games, and that would get tiresome.

You also have to keep in mind that the PS3 is a Blu-Ray HD player. To buy a standalone blu ray player is $999, and the competition, HD-DVD is $499.
So for the same price as the standalone HD player, you can buy the PS3 - if you NEVER use it as a game console, you have bought a superior High Def DVD player.
To buy the comparable computer you have to spend 2200 on the Sony Vaio with the BD-R drive, or $750 on the internal BD-R and then 30 or 40 bucks for an external housing for it.
The PS3 is really starting to sound nice...

LOL @ Bump.
Back to the DS. I actually bought one because I was going on a trip as well. The plan was to return it when I got back, but I still have it. There were some game from the GB advanced that I still have, so I play them on the DS. Super Mario DS is fun; MarioCart DS kicks ass, and I've got caught-up playing Trauma Center and Sims 2. I'm waiting on the DS Browser that I orded from Japan; I figured it would be nice to send and receive emails on the go without taking a laptop.
